The Pilot School Report Cards is the warehouse for every pertinent data point for every public school in South Hampton Roads.
The primary goal for this project was two-fold. First, I wanted to aggregate all of the disparate data sets the state puts out about each school into one place. Second, I wanted to build a process where anyone could upload the data without having to do a any complicated data processing. In this way we would have an archive of school data as the years progress, and always have the latest school metrics available to the public.
The entire site was built using the Django framework and designed to be responsive, with the primary focus on mobile users. You can select a school district, filter or sort the schools on the district pages, find schools nearest to you (using HTML 5 geolocation support and geopy), or analyze the data points on each school’s profile page. Every school has a permanent link, and the information on the page changes based on what type of school it is.
Using the django-import-export module, admin users are able to import new data sets to update the information on each school page. It also supports bulk data exporting, allowing future users to analyze years worth of school test pass rates, demographics, graduation rates and more.
